Grid Drawing Method in Art!

Children have been developing observational skills by creating tonal grid drawing during Art lessons.

The grid method involves drawing a grid over your reference picture/photo, and then drawing a grid of equal ratio on your work surface/paper.

Drawing complex objects purely by eye, without any visual aid like construction lines, or a physical aid like a proportional divider can be difficult.

However, using the grid method can help with drawing objects or pictures which require accuracy.

Investigating Plate Tectonics in Science!

In Science some of our children have been creating a tasty model to investigate plate tectonics.

This was a hands-on activity to teach students about plate tectonics.

The model describes the structure of the Earth’s plates and the Earth’s layers as well as the theory of plate tectonics.

This activity was completed after initial instruction on the layers of the Earth and tectonic plates.

European Art: Drawing Broken Buildings

Our home-schooled children have focusing on drawing skills, looking carefully at the work of European artist Anselm Kiefer.

Using the Photo pack of images and a PowerPoint to scaffold the discussion of Anselm Kiefer’s work they have presented some great artwork of crumbling buildings.

The children looked at facts about Anselm Kiefer’s life and work and their artwork focused on  features of a building, including windows and doors.

Designing your own planet project!

Last term, some of our students worked on designing their own planet during their Science lessons.

They started with planning, focusing on areas such as what the planet would look like, what colour it is, does anyone live there etc.

The children had the freedom to create their own version considering physical aspects as well as species that may live on it. Then the children went on to making their designs into a model.

This was a fun way to encourage students to be creative by allowing them to invent their very own planet!

3-D Sculpture – Paper Mache Hot Air Balloon Project

Our home-schooled children have been making hot air balloons last half term.

They were taught about what sculptures are, what materials can be used and tips for working with paper mache.

Children got to get their hands messy with paper mache and paint. They got to dip strips of paper into glue mixture and create 3 layers onto the balloon.

Have a look above at some of their fantastic striking hot air balloons!

Educational Afternoon at Recycle for Greater Manchester Waste Centre!

Last week our home schooled children had a wonderful trip to the Recycle for Greater Manchester Education Centre, as part of our science programme for this term.

The programme of learning activities began with the children exploring the interactive exhibition area and was then followed by an introduction by the Education Officer, which focused on learning about the various coloured bins and the waste that goes in them. The children then participated in an interactive discussion, showing how the items in the mixed recycling bin are matched with an item of science equipment that can be use to separate them (e.g. Magnet separates the steel cans).

Students take part in modelling the phases of the moon activity using Jaffa Cakes!

Some of our home-schooled students have been looking at the topic: The sun, moon, and stars during Science lessons.

The children reviewed what they have learned previously and then focused on the area about phases of the moon.

Students got to learn that the moon doesn’t actually change shape—it just appears to change as it orbits Earth.

Handmade beaded bracelets-Jewellery Making in Arts & Crafts!

Last week our home-schooled children focused on Handmade Jewellery making during Arts & Crafts lessons.

The children started with drawing their own creative designs of their own Jewellery and looked for inspiration from other resources.

They looked at a selection of necklaces, brooches and bracelets. They designed their own piece of jewellery and then made a simple bracelet.

Exploring visual art using different materials!

This term the children been exploring visual art looking at different materials such as felt, fabric different types of papers with various textures such as card, cellophane tissue paper and have looked at different shapes to create collages.

Many contemporary artists, such as Fred Tomaselli, continue to work in collage.

The boundaries of this medium are endless, and you will find many artists using some unusual materials.

Measuring Volume by Counting Unit Cubes!

Some of our home-schooled children have been learning about Volume during their Maths lessons.

Volume is the amount of space in a 3D Shape. It is measured in cubic units.

The children were able to find the volume of the shape by counting how many unit cubes fit inside it.

The students also got to write down the length, width, and depth and then work out the volume and surface area.

Resources such as multi-link cubes aided in making the shapes to work out the volume and surface area.
