Students test and determine the pH levels of liquids in a Science experiment!

Testing the pH level of a substance tells you if that substance is acidic, basic or neutral. One simple experiment to explore pH levels involves testing several everyday items you might use at work or at home.

Our home-schooled pupils got to test and determine the pH levels of liquids such as water (using different types of bottle and tap water) washing liquid, toilet cleaner, bleach, vinegar etc.

Students then went on to investigate whether the liquids are acidic or alkaline/basic.

Science experiments on pH levels can help investigators determine the pH level of a given material and how that level might affect the environment. These experiments can illustrate important processes such as the effect of acid rain on bodies of water.

Some of the children also got to participate in another experiment using electricity to split water into its TEI elements: hydrogen and oxygen. Water splitting is the chemical reaction in which water is broken down into oxygen and hydrogen: To find out what water is made of, it helps to look at its chemical formula, which is H2O. This basically tells us that the water molecule is composed of two elements: hydrogen and oxygen. Students got to learn about Electrolysis of water and demonstrate electric current passed through the water.
